The Port of Vancouver is Canada’s largest and most diversified port, stretching along 360 kilometres of shoreline and waterways, bordering on 16 municipalities and intersecting with traditional territories and treaty lands of several Coast Salish First Nations. Annually $200 billion in goods with more than 170 world economies are traded through the port. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority manages port lands at the Port of Vancouver, and leads the efficient and reliable movement of cargo and passengers.

As part of the Planning & Development Team, the Planner is responsible for administering the port’s Project Review and Building Permit processes, participating in port land use planning, and coordinating the port authority’s interests in land use initiatives.  In this role, you will:

  • For Project Permit applications:  Coordinate internal multi-disciplinary reviews of project proposals, as well as referrals to external agencies; assess the merits of applications with respect to planning criteria and appropriate development standards; liaise with applicants and their consultants; develop recommendations regarding project approval; monitor compliance with permit requirements.

  • For Building Permit applications:  Liaise with applicants, their consultants and local municipalities; coordinate and oversee the review undertaken by VFPA’s building code consultants; prepare permit recommendations; monitor compliance with permit requirements; administer contracts with the port authority’s building code consultants.

  • Provide a range of services regarding port land use planning including research, studies, and reports.  Participate in a variety of area and site-specific planning initiatives. Coordinate the port authority’s interests in land use planning initiatives undertaken by adjacent municipalities and other agencies.

  • Liaise with the public, port tenants and stakeholders on port-related land use and development activities and other initiatives.

As the successful candidate, you have a degree related to urban planning along with a minimum of 3 years related experience in urban or port planning, as well as eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planning.  Your outstanding interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, your strong orientation to customer service and your ability to work independently to achieve results set you apart from the rest. Experience in coordinating the review of rezoning and/or development applications in a local government setting would be an asset.

The port authority offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including an Earned Time Off program.
